Yau Ma Tei area in Hong Kong

A well known area in the Yau Tsim Mong district, Yau Ma Tei is also known as Yaumatei or Yau-ma-Tee.

It is recognised to be among the first few areas that were developed by the British after they acquired Kowloon during the 1860's. The Victoria Harbour lies on the west side of Yau Ma Tei area while towards the east is the mountainous region of Ho Man Tin. The north border is Mong Kok and the south border is Austin Road.

The present Yau Ma Tei area was formally a well known Kowloon village. The southern part was once known as the historic Kwun Chung. Before the British captured Kowloon in 1860 Yau Ma Tei was an important beach and bay that brought together large numbers of Tanka fishermen.

Yet another significant highlight is the Yau Ma Tei Typhoon Shelter which is an exotic water area that boasts numerous dining venues on boats. These unusual restaurants serve delectable and varied cuisines of indigenous seafood. The famous Typhoon Shelter was also at one point an important port in Hong Kong.

Ferry Point located in the Southern region of Yau Ma Tei is also a place worth a visit. It is well known as a transportation hub where ferries were operated by Hongkong and Yaumati Ferry. Ferry Point was the place where people took ferries in order to get to and from Hong Kong Island.

Among the historically acclaimed buildings in the area is the Yau Ma Tei Police Station. The first hospital that was opened in the area is the Kwong Wah Hospital which is managed by Tung Wah Group of Hospitals.

The peak of Yau Ma Tei's development took place during the period of 1960 to 1970. Places of interest here include Temple Street, Tin Hau Temple and Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Museum.
